Guide to choosing a pool

How to choose the right pool for your garden?

What could be better in the hot summer than cooling off in your own garden pool? But a garden pool doesn't just bring relief from the heat. It's also fun for the kids, who can enjoy a swim without losing sight of you. And after a hard day at work, you'll definitely enjoy the water relaxation too...

Before you go shopping, however, it's important to ask yourself a few basic questions to help you choose the right pool for your needs.

Basic Questions

How much space do I have?
Measure twice, fill the water once. Make sure you have enough space not only for the pool, but also for safe access to it and any equipment. The pool should be in full sun, should not be under a tree due to falling leaves, and should be easy to see if small children will be swimming in it.

What type of pool to choose?
Inflatable, frame, above ground or in-ground? Each type has advantages and disadvantages that are worth considering. We'll cover them all below, but the basic difference, in short, is that an inflatable pool provides more flexibility and is less maintenance intensive.

What is my financial idea?
The price of a pool can vary greatly depending on the type, size and material. Keep maintenance and accessory costs in mind as well. So it depends a lot on how often you want to use the pool, whether it's more for fun for the kids or a longer-term investment.

Who will use the pool most often?
Is the pool mainly for children or do you plan to swim regularly yourself? Depth requirements and safety features vary accordingly.

How much time will you have for maintenance?
Some pools require more care than others. If you don't have the time to regularly clean the water and worry about chemicals, opt for simpler options, or alternatively invest in quality sand filtration, which will significantly extend cleaning intervals and make the pool more enjoyable to use with less chemicals used.

Do you have the necessary accessories and equipment?
Filter system, tarps, steps, cleaning products - all of these may or may not be included. If you're looking for a simpler solution, choose from pools that also include a filtration system and other necessary accessories.

Firm pool or inflatable option?

Pools with a fixed structure

Solid above ground pools with metal construction are a great choice for those looking for a stable and long-lasting solution for backyard swimming. These pools have a solid frame that provides sturdy and reliable support for the pool liner. Installation is usually simple and can be handled by most DIYers within a few hours. Most fixed above-ground pools also offer the option of connecting filtration systems and other accessories that make maintenance easier and make swimming more comfortable.

PLUSES: Stable design, longer life, availability of accessories, easy installation, great price/performance ratio

MINUSES: Movable location and need for more maintenance vs. inflatable pools, aesthetically less impressive vs. inground pools

Inflatable swimming pools

Inflatable garden pools are the ideal solution for families looking for a quick and easy way to enjoy summer fun without the need for complicated installation. These pools are made from durable PVC material and installation is a matter of minutes - just inflate and fill with water. They're great for kids and adults alike and can be easily moved or stored in the off-season. With a variety of sizes and shapes, you can choose the pool that best suits your needs and the size of your garden.

PLUSES: Easy to install, quick to set up, relocatable, low cost, many shapes and sizes on the market

CONS:Less durable construction, shorter life span, not suitable for swimming, need to store for winter

Pool Types by Shape

Circular pools

Circular pools are easy to install and distribute water pressure evenly around the perimeter, extending their life and making installation easier. They are ideal for smaller gardens as they usually offer the largest volume of water per unit area. The circular shape is a great choice for children as it is better suited for play, has no sharp edges and is more impact resistant.

Rectangular pools

Choose this shape especially for larger pools where you can already swim lightly (for example, with a belt attached to your waist and the pool wall) and not just relax. Rectangular pools are easier to place alongside houses or fences, for example, and also offer a more aesthetic impression than a circular pool.

Oval pools

This shape combines the advantages of circular and rectangular pools. In fact, it is a suitable space for swimming and relaxation. The oval shape is often harmonious and aesthetically pleasing in most garden environments.

Depth, volume and material

Pool depth

The question of depth depends primarily on what purpose the pool will most often serve and whether it is also intended for children. A greater depth significantly increases the comfort of swimming and bathing, but it is not suitable for small children who cannot be let into the pool unaccompanied. Ideally, we choose a depth of 1 - 1.5 m, unless it is an explicitly children's pool

Pool dimensions and water volume

For ease of use, we recommend choosing circular pools with a diameter of at least 3.5 metres, while rectangular or oval shapes should be at least 6 x 3 metres. For smaller pools, both comfort and usability are often already limited. The water volume of garden pools is therefore most often between 4,000 and 9,000 litres of water.

Materials for swimming pools

Pools are made from a variety of materials that affect their durability, aesthetics and maintenance. The most common materials are PVC, rubber, steel, resin and laminate. Each of these materials has advantages and disadvantages that should be considered when choosing a pool.

PVC and rubber are affordable, easy to care for and are also lightweight. Their disadvantages are lower durability and poorer aesthetics. Steel, on the other hand, is impressive to look at, durable and strong, but can corrode in lower quality designs and usually does not allow for further handling.

What filtration to choose for your garden pool

Choosing the right filtration system is key to maintaining the cleanliness and quality of the water in your garden pool. There are several types of filtration systems that vary in efficiency, price and maintenance requirements. The most commonly used include sand filtration, cartridge filtration and diatomaceous earth (DE) filtration. Each type has advantages and disadvantages that must be considered when making a decision.

Sand filtration

Advantages
Effective cleaning: removes dirt and micro particles from water very efficiently.
Low operating costs: sand as a filter media is inexpensive and readily available.
Long life: sand only needs to be replaced every few years.

Disadvantages
Space requirement: Requires more space for installation than other filtration systems.
Regular maintenance: Needs regular backwashing to maintain its effectiveness.

Cartridge filtration

Benefits:
Simple Installation:Easy and quick to install even for the layman.
Compactness:Takes up less space than sand filtration.
Good Filtration Capacity:Effectively captures fine dirt and micro particles.

Disadvantages:
Higher operating costs: cartridges need to be replaced more often than sand.
More frequent maintenance: filter cartridges need to be cleaned or replaced regularly.

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filtration

Benefits:
Highest efficiency: Provides the finest filtration, capturing even the smallest particles.
High water quality: Provides very clean and clear water.

Disadvantages:
Higher purchase price: It is the most expensive type of filtration.
More difficult to maintain: Requires special procedures for cleaning and refilling diatomaceous earth powder.
